Ulun Danu Beratan

A lake temple 1,200 metres up in the misty highlands of Bedugul. Its tiered shrines seem to float on the still water of Lake Beratan, with forested volcanic hills all around.

History

The temple complex was founded in 1633, in the time of the kingdom of Mengwi, on the western shore of Lake Beratan. It was built as a place to honour the goddess of the lake and to ask for a steady supply of water for the farmland below.

Today it is one of Bali’s most important water temples and one of its most recognisable images, with landscaped gardens that make it popular with Balinese families as well as travellers.

Meaning and culture

Ulun Danu means “head of the lake”. The temple is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the Balinese goddess of water, lakes and rivers. Lake Beratan feeds rivers and springs that irrigate much of central Bali, so farmers pray here for water for their rice fields.

The tall 11-tiered meru is dedicated to Shiva and his consort Parvati. Inside the complex there is also a Buddha statue, and a small Buddhist stupa stands nearby, a quiet symbol of religious harmony in Bali.
