Jimbaran Bay is a calm, curved beach on the narrow neck of the Bukit Peninsula, best known for sunset dinners at the water’s edge. Grilled seafood served with sand underfoot is the reason most people come.

History

Jimbaran is a traditional fishing village, and fishing boats remain part of the bay’s character. Its position just south of the airport, at the neck of the Bukit Peninsula, makes it an easy first or last stop on a Bali trip.

Tourism arrived through beachfront dining and several large resorts. The area was struck by bombings in 2005 that targeted beachside restaurants, but visitor numbers have since recovered.

Meaning and culture

The seafood tradition here is tied to the sea. Diners usually pick live seafood from a stall and have it grilled over coconut husk fires, a method that gives the food its smoky flavour.

The bay is also a place where local life and tourism overlap, with fishers, families and travellers sharing the same shoreline in the evening.
