Seminyak and Canggu form a long stretch of black-sand coast on Bali’s south-west side, known for beach clubs, cafes and sunset surf. Seminyak feels polished and boutique-minded, while Canggu is looser, greener and more surf-driven.
History
Kuta, Legian and Seminyak were the established tourist areas on this coast well before Canggu drew crowds. Canggu was long a farming village of rice paddies and coconut groves, with a beach of about 10 km along its shore.
Since the early 2020s Canggu has grown quickly into one of Bali’s most popular destinations. Villas, cafes and co-working spaces have replaced a good deal of the farmland, and the village now lists nine tourist beaches along its coast.
Meaning and culture
The beaches here are not only for visitors. Local communities use the shoreline for ceremonies, and Batu Bolong Beach sits beside a temple, a reminder that these are living sacred places as well as surf breaks.
The sand is dark volcanic grey, and the surf is strong. Locals and long-term residents have built a culture around early surf sessions, yoga and slow breakfasts, which gives the area its distinctive relaxed rhythm.
